How to use FTP for your site updates
File Transfer Protocol (FTP) is an easy way to publish your pages. There are a few things you'll need to do first to get set up.
We recommend using an FTP software. There are many available, some are free and some are not. Here is a list of the programs with which we are familiar:
- Filezilla: http://filezilla-project.org. Cost: Free
- SmartFTP: http://www.smartftp.com. Cost: Free
- WiseFTP: http://wise-ftp.com. Cost: $49.00
Once you have obtained one of these programs, you will need to connect to the server. Each web site has it's own user name and password, please contact us for yours.
- The site you will log in to is: ftp.your site name.com
- You will be asked for your site user name and password. Enter those.
- Next, there should be a location to enter the port, please enter 21.
- You should be given the option to use Passive login, be sure to use that option.
- The software will ask you where you keep your files locally (Your hard drive).
- Connect to the server (this might take a few moments)
- Click on the file you have edited and wish to publish
- Tell the software to upload your file
Remember, if you have any new images on your page, you must upload them also.
